Introduction of Jesus: Hard Work & Service Life
Text: Romans 12:11, John 10:10, John 9:4
- The Bible encourages us not to be slothful in business but fervent in spirit, serving the Lord (Romans 12:11). This admonition reminds us of the importance of wholehearted commitment and tireless effort in our daily endeavors, whether in our professions, relationships, or ministry.
- Jesus exemplified these principles throughout his earthly ministry, demonstrating a profound work ethic and a heart devoted to serving others. Matthew 20:28 NIV
- Jesus engaged in purposeful labor, teaching, healing, and reaching out to those in need. Mark 1: 35-39, Matthew 20:31-34, Acts 10:38
- Jesus’ teachings on stewardship; acts of compassion and sacrifice provides us with a blueprint for living a life of purpose, integrity, and impact. Matt 25:14-30; Luke 19:1-9
- His life serves as a beacon of inspiration for us as we navigate our own paths, seeking to honor God through our work and service to others.
Definitions of Hard work & Service
- Hard work refers to the sustained and diligent effort put into accomplishing tasks, achieving goals, or improving oneself and often entails overcoming challenges, persevering through difficulties, and consistently striving for excellence.
- Service refers to the act of assisting, helping, or supporting others in various capacities, often with the intention of benefiting them or contributing to their well-being.
- Work applies to everything that a Christian might do —
1. from the good “deeds” done – Col 1:9-10
2. Labor we do because we live in the world Col 3:23 and
3. Specific ministry labor. Col 1:28-29; 3:17; 4:12;(whatever you do in word or work), Ephesians 4:11.
What Jesus said about Work and Service
- I must be about my Father’s business (Luke 2:49)
- I must work the works of Him that sent me (John 9:4)
- The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few Luke 10:2
- “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” Matthew 5:16
- Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all. Mark 9:35(NIV)

- Healing the Sick and Afflicted. Matthew 4:23-25; Matthew 8:1-17; Mark 1:29-34; Luke 4:38-41

- Washing the Disciples’ Feet John 13:12-17.
- Teaching and Preaching the message of the kingdom of God, serving others by sharing spiritual truths and guidance. Matthew 4:17; Matthew 5:1-48; Mark 1:14-15; Luke 4:16-21
- Caring for the Marginalized by showing love and acceptance to all. Luke 7:36-50 (woman who anointed Jesus’ feet); Luke 19:1-10 ; Luke 15:1-2 (eating with sinners and tax collectors).

Our Biblical Examples
- Paul the Apostle: demonstrated tireless dedication to spreading the gospel and serving others, even in the face of hardship and persecution. 1 Cor. 15:10-11, Phil 3:12-14.
- Dorcas (Tabitha): known for her acts of charity and service, particularly in making clothing for the widows in her community. Acts 9:36-42.
- Priscilla and Aquila: Opened their home for gatherings and instructing others in the way of the Lord. Romans 16:3-5; 1 Corinthians 16:19.
- Timothy: A co-worker with Paul, known for his diligence, faithfulness, and service in ministry. Acts 16:1-3; Philippians 2:19-23.
- Epaphroditus: A messenger and minister to Paul, risking his life for the work of Christ and showing dedication and sacrificial service. Philippians 2:25-30.

Contemporary Example of Service
- Archbishop Benson Idahosa lived a very impactful life. He rose from a background most of us can identify with. As a child, he was rejected by his father because he was sickly. He was at various times a newspaper vendor, a truck driver and a Bata shoe company employee. But he rose against all odds to become a leader of Pentecostalism in Nigeria, Africa. He inspired multiple thousands in Nigeria, Africa and beyond to dream and to go for the best in life. He founded the Church of God Mission International, built hospitals and schools and gave scholarships to over a thousand students in various institutions. Archbishop Benson Idahosa served his generation.
